University of Maryland Betting Deal Ended By PointsBet

The University of Maryland and PointsBet Sportsbook no longer have a sports betting partnership. The official termination of the deal came late last month, with the announcement coming as potential legislation in the Old Line State could further change the state’s college betting landscape.

This news also comes after another betting partnership ended with the University of Colorado at Boulder. Sports wagering in general has been a hot topic in sports as of late, with some ongoing investigations into three major programs this month.

PointsBet Ending University of Maryland Partnership

The deal between the University of Maryland Terrapins and PointsBet Sportsbook has officially come to an end. Legal Sports Report has revealed that PointsBet ended the original deal towards the end of April, ceasing any further promotions, including ads on campus and digital marketing.

This makes it the second time PointsBet Sportsbook has ended an ongoing partnership with a college sports team. At the end of March, the deal between the University of Colorado and PointsBet was given the axe, meaning no more Folsom Field advertising or sportsbook messaging through the school’s channels.

The partnership began in 2020, and officially ends with three years remaining. The news of the CU deal ending coincided with PointsBet joining the responsible Gaming Coalition alongside fellow sports betting operators like Fanatics Sportsbook and Hard Rock Sportsbook. Another sports betting partnership looks to be on its way out, as a deal between Caesars Sportsbook and the Michigan State Spartans appears to be dissolving.

Maryland Bill Would Add Further Restrictions

A new bill passed by Maryland lawmakers could add a new restriction to college betting deals in the state. The bill would require all sports wagering deals with the University of Maryland and other schools located in the state to be made public and prevent the schools from being compensated for new user signups.

Before being written into law, the bill would need a signature from Governor Wes Moore. Interestingly, the recently terminated deal with the University of Colorado had the school receiving compensation when new users sign up, which raised some eyebrows.

This news comes at a time when college sports betting has been in the news, and not in a positive light. Just a week ago, the Ohio Casino Control Commission made the decision to put a hold on any wagers in the state on the University of Alabama Crimson Tide baseball team.

This was due to some bizarre betting that had occurred at a retail sportsbook in the state on a Crimson Tide game. Most recently, both Iowa State University and Iowa University have launched investigations into student athlete betting.

Maryland Sports Betting Snapshot

The end of the University of Maryland’s partnership comes at a time when sports betting in the state hasn’t even been available for six months. The state launched mobile sports betting on November 23rd, 2022, with the legal betting age being 21 and up.

While some states have specific rules for betting on in-state college teams, Maryland sports betting law allows for wagers on different teams in the state like the Terrapins, Mount St. Mary’s University Mountaineers, and John Hopkins University Blue Jays.
