After being pegged as an afterthought by most media outlets, the Miami Heat put the Celtics on blast by stealing game one on the road. They went down early in the contest, entering halftime comfortably behind. That was before they exploded in the third quarter, building a massive lead that they managed to hold on to until the final buzzer behind another brilliant Jimmy Butler performance.

Heat vs Celtics SGP Best Bets

With the NBA action dwindling to a game a night, let’s dive deep into the matchup and muster up a SGP off of how I think the game script will go. After opening as a massive favorite on the series moneyline, the Celtics have now seen those odds plummet after a game one loss. They come in as a sizable favorite ATS in game two, making it a must win situation in order to avoid a 0-2 deficit before the next two games taking place in Miami.

SGP Leg 1: Miami Heat +9

The first leg of my SGP is also a straight bet that I already made moments after the final buzzer of game one. The Heat were +8.5 in game one, now bumping down to +9 for game two. Make it make sense.

Yes, I am fully aware that the Celtics won three of the four quarters before an unrealistic offensive explosion in the third quarter from the Heat gave them a lead that they held onto for the rest of the game. Still, the Heat have too many advantages that give me any sort of conviction that they cannot at least keep it close.

Coach Spoelstra coaches’ circles around Joe Mazzulla, Jimmy Butler is arguably the best player on the court, and Bam Adebayo is the best all-around big man in the interior. The Heat have been severely disrespected throughout the playoffs, now getting an opportunity to make a statement heading into game two.

SGP Leg 2: Jayson Tatum u3.5 Threes

When firing on all cylinders, Jayson Tatum is one of the best players in the NBA. That was made apparent in game seven against the 76ers, seemingly scoring at will. The issue with Tatum is that he tends to disappear at various moments throughout the playoffs, either struggling to put the ball through the hoop or coughing up turnovers with head scratching decision making.

Knowing that they need to take Tatum out of a rhythm by disrupting his shooting flow, the Heat will look to apply pressure from the halfcourt and dare Tatum to drive on Adebayo instead of giving up a look from deep. Getting the ball out of his hands and throwing doubles dares someone else to beat them, giving the Heat a better chance of keeping this close.

SGP Leg 3: Jimmy Butler u1.5 Threes

Tatum isn’t the only player I’m fading on their three-point prop as Jimmy Butler has ticked up to 1.5 entering into game two. This has been a common theme for me throughout the playoffs as Butler has remained consistent on how he operates on the offensive end.

Whether it’s the Milwaukee Bucks, New York Knicks, or Boston Celtics, Jimmy Butler’s first read on offense is to attack the middle. This sets up their offense, either pulling up for a high-quality mid-range look, attacking the rim, or kicking out to an open spot up shooter.

Butler has been a weak three-point shooter throughout his career, only attempting them in desperation mode or if he is wide open. The Celtics will make it their mission to constantly have pressure in Butler’s face, taking away the three and forcing him into a congested interior.

SGP Leg 4: Al Horford u6.5 Rebounds

It was made apparent early in the contest that Al Horford would struggle with the stronger and more nimble Bam Adebayo, being forced to stretch out towards the perimeter and taking away his opportunities to grab a rebound.

Not only do I expect more of the same of Al Horford hovering around the perimeter, but the Celtics may opt into the idea of giving some of his minutes to Robert Williams who can body Adebayo in the interior on the defensive end.
