While Week 0 certainly doesn’t feature a ton of big-name programs and highly-ranked teams, there is still a highly compelling slate of games to bet on. Nebraska at Northwestern (12:30 PM EST, Fox)
Two Big Ten programs searching for resurgent seasons after 3-9 finishes in 2021 meet in Ireland for an international game years in the making. Nebraska has replaced the polarizing Adrian Martinez with new quarterback Casey Thompson. Former Pitt offensive coordinator Mark Whipple will coach the offense after orchestrating a career year from NFL first-round pick Kenny Pickett. Northwestern returns two talented running backs in Evan Hull and Cam Porter, but the rest of the team has significant question marks.
Wyoming at Illinois (4:00 PM EST, Big Ten Network)
Brett Bielema led the Fighting Illini to a 5-7 record in his first season as head coach, but he wasn’t satisfied with the team’s underwhelming offense. New offensive coordinator Barry Lunney will implement a new system with Syracuse transfer Tommy DeVito at quarterback. He’s supported by running back Chase Brown and wide receiver Isaiah Williams in an offense with sneaky talent. Craig Bohl’s Wyoming team lost significant players on both sides of the ball, but the Cowboys reached a bowl game for the fourth time in six years in 2021.
Duquesne at Florida State (5:00 PM EST, ACCN)
After Seminole Fans had to wait until October to see their first win in 2021, that won’t be the case this season. While Duquesne went 7-3 last year, they are an FCS program that doesn’t have nearly the same level of talent as Florida State. The Seminoles have endured four straight losing seasons for the first time since the 1970s, but fans are hopeful Jordan Travis can be the quarterback that leads them back to relevance in the ACC.
Florida A&M at North Carolina (8:15 PM, ACCN)
The Tar Heels have done an excellent job with recruiting in the Mac Brown era, but it hasn’t translated to an overwhelmingly successful season yet. North Carolina finished just 6-7 last year despite beginning the season ranked in the top ten. Drake Maye replaced Sam Howell under center for this year, and he has the luxury of one of the top receiving talents in the country in Josh Downs. That duo should begin their season with a strong performance against a Florida A&M team that won’t be able to keep up.
North Texas at UTEP (9:00 PM EST, Stadium)
These two teams aren’t quite on the same tier as UAB and UTSA in Conference USA, but they aren’t too far off. UTEP finished with a 7-6 record last year, but that was a disappointing finish after a 6-1 start. The strength of the Miners’ roster is a defense that returns eight starters. They will be hoping to start the year strong again but maintain it this time around. Meanwhile, North Texas has an intriguing upside after winning five straight to close last season. The Mean Green added two Power Five wide receivers to an offense that returns eight starters, and they should be able to put up points this year.
Vanderbilt Commodores at Hawaii Rainbow Warriors (10:30 PM, CBSSN)
Would the first Saturday of the college football season really be complete without a late-night appearance from the Rainbow Warriors? With Timmy Chang, the team’s former legendary quarterback, taking over as the new head coach, there is hope for this team. However, they have the unfortunate task of facing an SEC team that is catching all of the sharp money despite finishing last season with a 2-10 record.
