2022 Sony Open In Hawaii: Odds, Predictions, Picks
The 2022 Sony Open marks the second event of the season. We will see an extended field compared to last week and some names bow out. Cameron Smith and Hideki Matsuyama headline the field, but there are plenty of names looking to notch an early win. This will set up to be another low-scoring event. Waialae Country Club
While we will see another event with plenty of low scores, it is important to note there is more of an urgency for hitting fairways. Waialae CC is a par 70 and has two Par 5s and 4 Par 3s. One of the more notable holes on the course is the 8th hole, which is a par 3 and sits alongside the Pacific Ocean.
It is once again Bermuda greens and Strokes Gained: Putting has been crucial at this event. The same goes for Strokes Gained: Approach. I would put a bit more emphasis on Greens in Regulation (GIR) compared to last week where there was a lack of hazards. This is still a relatively easy course, but it is still worth noting.
Par 3 and Par 4 scoring is also something to keep an eye on. The two Par 5’s are not necessarily a challenge. Golfers have birdied 60% of the time on Hole 9 and 50% of the time on Hole 18. The 506 distance on Hole 9 is a great chance for an eagle opportunity.

Sony Open Course History Notables
Webb Simpson is this week’s course history darling. He has finished top 5 in each of his last three trips here and his lowest finish in the last four is T13. Charles Howell III has had two top 20s and two top 10s in his last five trips to the Sony Open.
Patton Kizzire is a former winner here, winning back in 2018. He finished T7 last year and T13 in 2019. However, he did miss the cut in 2020. While it is a smaller sample, Brendan Steele finished T4 and 2nd in 2021 and 2020.
2022 Sony Picks & Predictions
No real surprise to see Cameron Smith leading the odds to win the Sony Open. He could do the double in Hawaii and has been on a tear going back to last year. Smith will have a longer field to contend with him but a lot of the big names will be skipping this event. Bryson DeChambeau was penciled in this week but dropped out. Hideki Matsuyama is the other more notable name for the public and he comes in at +1800. As mentioned last week, he can excel here but the putter has to be hot.
Webb Simpson (+1200) – It is really hard not to like Webb Simpson this week as he checks a lot of the boxes we are looking at. Simpson is a chalky pick with his course history, but he ranks 3rd in BoB Gained and is first among the field in Strokes Gained: Par 4 Scoring. I talked about Sungjae Im last week and he is a name again I am going back to for the same reasons. He excels in Par 4 scoring, putts well on Bermuda, and in these tournaments, he can score with the best of them. I like him as a top 5 finish at +450 as well.
2022 Sony Open To Make Top 5 Picks
Talor Gooch (+550) – Going back to the well here. Talor Gooch finished 15th, shooting -20 at the Sentry last weekend. He continues to score well and is first in total Strokes Gained among the field over the last 24 rounds. His Par 3 and Par 4 scoring rank top 15 in the field and he is 15th in BoB Gained.
